CHOTSKIES

Here is a definition for you:

CHOTSKIES: Generally useless crap of little or no value. Similar to knick-knacks

This past week we rented a cottage, the PERFECT cottage on the PERFECT lake (Lime Lake, Leelanau county MI). This cottage was perfect in so many ways, lots of living space, 2 bathrooms, enough beds for the 12 of us, great deck, lake front, private, hammock, sun, shade, fishing...need I go on?

The only thing that was, well, not to our taste, was the decor. The entire house was filled with chotskies. The walls were covered with shelves of driftwood, paintings, glass bowls, old books, rocks, a ball of tinfoil, more driftwood... There was even a large stick hanging from the ceiling with what appeared to be dental floss (every day, with out fail, one of the kids would ask "Why is there a stick in the air?"...which was even funnier since of the children can not stay "stick" and substitues a "d" for the "st").

There were 40 lamps in the cottage. 40. This is not counting the lighting in the ceiling. Just plug in lamps. One was plastic neon green in the shape of a light bulb.

There was also a tribute to Betty Boop. This included a 4 foot tall plastic statue of her holding a torch with was, of course, one of the 40 lamps. There was also a Betty Boop rubber ducky. There was a plastic duck with about 10 marti gras beads on the back porch and a metal mermaid (topless) with jingle bells velcroed to her arm on the front deck. There was a ceramic dog laying on it's back, wooden balls nailed together resting on some sort of other wooden object... The list just goes on...Oh and I should mention the wicker picnic basket turned end table.

I do not want to sound like a complainer, We really learned to appreciate these chotskies through the week. We even added one ourselves to see if it is there next year...
